Simone Biles
Simone Arianne Biles (/sI’moUn ‘baI@lz14 March 1997; 4) is an American artistic gymnast. She tied Shannon Miller for the number of Olympic medals in American gymnastics and is currently the ninth most. Biles is considered by many to be the best gymnast of all time, having won 25 World Championship medals. Joe Biden awarded Biles the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2022. Biles received individual gold medals at Rio de Janeiro's 2016 Summer Olympics. Bronze on the balance beam, vault and all-around were her awards. Biles also won bronze in the United States Team, which was dubbed the "Final Five". She withdrew from the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics due to "the twisties" which is an air balance disorder that temporarily impairs her ability to maintain her balance. With the US team she won an award for balance beam and a silver. Her partial withdrawal, emphasis on mental health, safety and perseverance were recognized. She is also five-time World all-around champion (2013-15 and 2018-19) as well as five-time World floor exercises champion (2013-15 and 2018-19) Three-time World balance beam champion (2014-15 2019, 2019) Two-time World vault champion (1918-19) 2021) seven-time United States all-around champ (2013-16, 2018-19, 2021) and a member of the gold medalists on the American team in the 2014, 2015 and 2018 World Arts Gymnastics Championships. She is also an World silver medalist in vault and balance beam (2013 and 2014) in 2013 and 2014, and a threetime World bronze medalist in vault (2015 2013, 2013 and the year 2018 on uneven bars).
Biles is the gymnast with the most World medals (25) and also the most World gold medals (19) surpassing Vitaly Scherbo's record of 23 World medals when she won her 24th and 25th, both gold, at the 2019 World Championships in Stuttgart. 8 She is also the only female gymnast with the highest number of World all-around titles (5). She is the sixth female to achieve both an individual and team all-around title at the Olympics or World Championships. Biles is the tenth first American female gymnast to earn the World medal in every event. The feat was made at the 2018 World Championships. Biles was born on March 14, 1997, in Columbus, Ohio, the third of four siblings.Her birth mother, Shanon Biles, was not able to take care of Simone as well as her siblings - Adria, Ashley, and Tevin. All four children were into and out of foster care. After finding out that Shanon's children were in foster care, Ron Biles (Biles' maternal grandfather) and Nellie Cayetano Biles (his second wife) began to temporarily care for Shanon in Spring, Texas. In 2003, the Biles family officially adopted Simone and her younger sister Adria. Ron's sister Shanon, Shanon’s aunt Harriet, adopted their two oldest children. Biles is a Belizean citizen because of her adoptive mother and believes that Belize her second home. Biles as well as her family members are Catholic.
